Charles Darwin was a British naturalist and geologist, best known for his vast contribution to evolutionary theory. He theorised that every living species descended, over time, from various common ancestors; he also helped establish the scientific notion widely referred to as natural selection. Darwin later published his theory, entitling the book: The Origin of Species; in just over ten years, from the date of publication, his evolutionary theory was considered by the general public as fact. He later examined human evolution and once again published his findings in his book, The Descent of Man. Another book deserved of mention is Darwin’s Voyage of the Beagle, a vibrant and exhilarating travel memoir which scientifically details the five years he spent traversing the world’s lands and seas; a publication that brought him both great fame and popularity.

British author Edward Frederic Benson, born in 1867, was lucky enough to achieve literary acclaim, not just in his lifetime, but indeed from his first published novel Dodo (1893) which was an instant success. The novels that followed received similar levels of admiration, these include: Mrs. Ames (1912); Queen Lucia (1920); Miss Mapp (1922) and Lucia in London (1927). In total he went on to write an array of books (nearly 100) on varying subjects ranging from biographies to memories pertaining to late Victorian and Edwardian England. He died in 1940, aged 72, of throat cancer; he is buried in the cemetery at Rye, East Sussex.

Joseph Conrad was born in 1857, to Polish parents in Ukraine. At the age of 16, he began a sea-faring career in the French and British merchant marines, a path he continued on for a further sixteen years. During this time he rose in rank and became a British citizen and travelled around the world – he visited exotic places such as: India; Singapore; Australia and Africa which helped to fuel his later writing career. He was able to write short stories and novels such as Lord Jim, Heart of Darkness and The Secret Agent by drawing heavily from his own experiences of being in remote places. These books, like the author himself, whom had previously attempted to commit suicide, deal with both moral conflict and the dark side of human nature. Conrad died of a heart attack in England in 1924, aged 66.

Jane Austen was a novelist whose books, set among the middle and upper classes in English society, have attained an enduring popularity and have been the subject of countless film and TV adaptations. Born in a small village in Hampshire, England, she was one of eight children of a clergyman. She began writing as a teenager, but it was not until 1811, when she was in her early thirties, that her first book, ‘Sense and Sensibility’ was published, followed by her classic novel, ‘Pride and Prejudice’ in 1813. This was followed by ‘Mansfield Park’ (1814) and ‘Emma'(1816). All four books were published anonymously and two more, ‘Persuasion’ and ‘Northanger Abbey’, were published posthumously after her tragically early death in 1817. Her books attracted little attention during her life time and many years passed before she came to be seen as one the greatest English novelists of all time.

Alcott was a 19th-century American author who produced wholesome stories for children. Alcott’s literary success arrived with the publication of Little Women: or Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy; a story that is often thought to contain semi-autobiographical elements pertaining to Alcott’s own childhood with her sisters in Massachusetts. Good Wives, the sequel to the aforementioned follows the March sisters’ journey into adulthood and their respective marriages. Little Men detailed Jo’s life at the Plumfield School that she founded with her husband and Jo’s Boys is the final instalment of the “March Family Saga.”

Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald was born of Irish-American stock in 1896 in St Paul, Minnesota. In 1913 he attended Princeton University. On leaving, without a degree, he joined the army but, although he undertook battle training, he never served on the Western Front in Europe during the Great War. Upon his discharge in 1918 he moved to New York City hoping to launch a career in advertising that would be lucrative enough to convince Zelda Sayle, with whom he had fallen madly in love, to marry him. Initially Zelda accepted his marriage proposal but, after some time and, despite working at an advertising firm and writing short stories, he was unable to convince her that he would be able to support her, leading her to break off the engagement.

William Shakespeare was an English poet, playwright, and actor, widely regarded as the greatest writer to ever exist, in the English language. His entire lifework consist of approximately 38 plays, 154 sonnets, 2 longer narrative poems, and a handful of additional verses, some of indeterminate authorship. His plays have been translated into every major current language and are performed more often than those of any other playwright, past or present.

Shakespearean tragedies will almost definitely contain a flawed yet gallant protagonist, who finds himself in a traumatic predicament of sorts and has a tendency to come to a fatal end. Such plays include: Romeo and Juliet; Hamlet; Othello and Macbeth.
